New Library Homepage in Beta Phase

In August 2008, with the grand opening of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, we went live with a brand new website meant to reflect the changing face of the UNR Libraries. As a container for the many aspects of and services offered by the library, it has served us well, but the time has come to [...]

We have a late edition to our “Comstock Conversations” series, which kicks off two new Knowledge Center exhibits and celebrates the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Comstock Lode.

The KC Makes the Local News - Watch the Video

KTVN-TV Channel 2 recently aired a news report extolling the virtues of the Knowledge Center as a hub for campus learning and collaboration, as well as a shining example of the university library in the 21st Century. They were kind enough to send over a tape, and our Teaching and Learning Technologies department turned it [...]

Knowledge Center Wins PRO AV Spotlight Award

It’s official–UNR has itself an award-winning library. The Knowledge Center was awarded for “Best Education AV Project”, a national-level commendation and part of the PRO AV Spotlight Awards. This is in recognition of the 168-seat Wells Fargo Auditorium, featuring surround-sound, three-screen HD projection, and video capture and streaming, as well as our digital classrooms and, [...]

Microsoft Surface Brings Cutting Edge Technology to Knowledge Center

The Knowledge Center has gotten some press recently on UNR’s Nevada News site for its pioneering work with the Microsoft Surface–described as “a giant, table-sized iPhone”–available, for the amusement and education of our customers, down on the @One level by the Dynamic Media Lab and in the second floor atrium by the Library Services desk. [...]

Special Collections Video Available on YouTube

Tasked with creating a viral advertisement for a class competition, a UNR journalism student, Robin Bigda, cooked up this peek into the UNR Libraries’ Special Collections (for future reference, you can find it, as well, on the Knowledge Center’s downloads page). Hopefully, this whets your appetite for the full Special Collections experience, and you are [...]

Instructional Design Aids Development of Online Capstone Course

The UNR main site has posted an article detailing the development of the University’s first fully online capstone course. That course in Women’s Studies, “Gender and Society”, has been awarded an international distinction by Blackboard Inc for innovation in online learning. Click here to read about how this course came to fruition and the role [...]

Wireless Printing in the Knowledge Center

For those of you with personal laptops connecting to the campus wireless network, we would like to announce that you can now send your print jobs over the network to one of five printers in the Knowledge Center (one on each floor). At the moment, this pertains to Windows users only, but drivers for Mac [...]

The Knowledge Center wants your photos

Though we have lived in the Knowledge Center for some time, we still can’t quite get enough of looking at pictures of our building. Oddly, however, though we have managed to stockpile a plethora of photos documenting the construction of the KC, we are short on photographs documenting its post-opening life.
Where that life is concerned, [...]

Making Research Simpler with SFX Find It @ UNR

If you’ve done research and searched for journal articles, our ‘Find It’ button may look familiar to you:

Behind the scenes library staff members constantly coordinate, to create a seamless transition from searching in an article database to getting the full text article that you need:

Since this service was first initiated, the use has been significant [...]

Competition-winning concrete canoe on display in KC lobby

Earlier this week saw the installation of a new display in the front lobby of the Knowledge Center, just by the Southern entrance, across from the Book Nook.
I am talking, of course, about the concrete canoe that last June scored our UNR team, Argentum, a first-place showing in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 21st [...]

Insight to Knowledge - student film explores the KC

We, the staff of the Knowledge Center, have probably spoken to the point of discursiveness about the many splendors of the building, but why should you take our word for it? It is the users who give a place meaning and vitality, so for context and perspective, it might be helpful, then, to hear what [...]

Upgrade! Dissertations & Theses now available

For years, the UNR Libraries has purchased doctoral dissertations and master theses for individuals from ProQuest/UMI through Document Delivery Services. But in October 2008, the Knowledge Center reallocated the funds used to purchase these materials to upgrade our subscription from Dissertation Abstracts (an abstracting and indexing database that provided full-text access only to UNR material [...]

Audio Tour of the Knowledge Center available

It has, at this point, been more than two months since the official grand opening, and yet I would venture to say that many of you reading this, regardless of the number of times that you have visited the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, might still possess a slight anxiety in regards to the sheer enormousness of [...]

New Building, New Faces

You’ve seen the Knowledge Center’s librarians at the Research and Computing Help Desk, but what else do we do? You might not know that your department or major has its very own librarian who is an expert in your subject! In August, eight new librarians started at the Knowledge Center, each with their own specialty.

Madeline [...]

Need a Break?

In college and grad school, there were plenty of times when I got so sick of my reading for class that I just wanted to ignore it for a while and read something “fun”. So I would go upstairs in my university library and sort through all the big heavy dusty academic books to find [...]
